Three Pianos just won an OBIE Award and is heading to New York Theater Workshop! ![]() See the following website for more details: www.threepianos.com Written, arranged and performed by Rick Burkhardt, Alec Duffy and Dave Malloy Original run: February/March 2010, The Ontological Theater at St. Mark's Church Here's what the critics said:
The New York Times:
"scrappy and surreal. . .cleverly constructed mayhem, with Mr. Duffy,
Mr. Malloy and Mr. Burkhardt metamorphosing among characters and
centuries. . .(they) give this gloomy song cycle an amusing theatrical
makeover."
Time Out New York: FIVE STARS "Boisterous, offhandedly virtuosic.... the trio is a real-life music-theater supergroup. . .Full-blooded and full-bodied, 'Three Pianos' lifts its glass to music, to Schubert and to the type of friendship that can make you laugh off heartbreak. It's also a superb evening." The Village Voice: "Antidote to winter's dregs. . . warms spectators at the hearth of musical enthusiasm." Culturebot: "a real gem of a piece. . . the show that keeps you going." Three friends,
each at his own piano, lead the audience through their respective
passions for Winterreise, Schubert's famous song cycle on winter
heartbreak -- performing the songs, grappling with fundamental
questions about the nature of music, slipping into the skins of
Schubert and friends during one of their famous Schubertiads, and
drinking way too much. Compositional mayhem, shifting rivalries,
and some unfortunate butchery of the German language ensue.
